Suspect denies targeting Vice President after reckless wrong-way drive on highway.
A Milwaukee man driving the wrong way on I-794 nearly collided with Vice President Kamala Harris’ motorcade on Monday night, authorities confirmed. The suspect, believed to be intoxicated, was stopped by local law enforcement before any serious incident occurred.
Around 8:20 p.m., security footage captured the driver entering the interstate through an off-ramp, heading west in the eastbound lanes just as Harris’ motorcade approached on the otherwise closed highway. As the motorcade of more than a dozen vehicles passed, the driver swerved into the left lanes, narrowly avoiding contact with the first squad car leading the procession. Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Deputies, positioned at the rear of the motorcade, eventually stopped the driver.
The 55-year-old Milwaukee resident, whose name has not been released pending formal charges, appeared unaware of the severity of his actions. According to the arrest report, the suspect expressed shock when informed he had nearly struck a vehicle in the Vice President’s convoy. “He had no recollection of entering the freeway or coming close to striking another vehicle,” the report stated. The man also emphasized that he had no intention of harming Harris or anyone associated with her campaign.
Authorities noted that the driver failed multiple field sobriety tests and had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle at the time of the arrest. He is currently facing charges of operating while intoxicated and second-degree recklessly endangering safety. The suspect remains in custody without bail as he awaits his hearing.
Harris’ campaign has referred inquiries about the incident to the United States Secret Service. In a statement, Secret Service spokesperson Joe Routh said, “The U.S. Secret Service is aware of the incident involving a motorist traveling in the opposite direction on the highway while the Vice President was in her motorcade. We are grateful to the Milwaukee Sheriff’s Office for their swift response, which allowed them to stop the motorist and take the driver into custody for DUI.”
